Rottnest Island – disposal of boat batteries.
Please make sure your return your batteries to specified locations on the mainland as it is not permitted to leave them on Rottnest Island.
As Rottnest works towards increased sustainability, the Rottnest island Authority encourage visitors to the Island to engage in environmentally friendly behaviours such as disposing of waste correctly.
One issue the RIA have been facing recently is that some members of the boating community have been leaving used boat batteries at the end of the jetty as waste. Rottnest Island does not have an appropriate facility to process the batteries and they are disposed of as ‘hazardous waste’ before being stockpiled and then shipped off the Island. This not only comes at a cost to RIA time and finances to stockpile and dispose of the batteries but also to the environment, as the batteries are unable to be recycled at all if they are classed as hazardous waste.
There are allocated locations to dispose of boat batteries at the Fishing Boat Harbour in Fremantle, and for members, there is also a disposal point at the Fremantle Sailing Club.
